Understanding Kenya’s Climate

Kenya has an equatorial climate with significant variations depending on region and altitude. The year is mainly divided into two dry seasons and two rainy seasons.

Dry Seasons

  • January to March: One of the best times for a safari. The vegetation is sparse, wildlife gathers around waterholes, and temperatures are pleasant.
  • July to October: The major dry season. Also the time of the Great Migration in the Masai Mara — an unforgettable experience. Ideal for safaris and beach getaways.

Rainy Seasons

  • Short rains (November–December): Brief showers, usually in the late afternoon. Still a good time for safaris, with lush green landscapes.
  • Long rains (April–June): Heavy rainfall, muddy tracks, and some impassable roads. Generally not recommended for first-time visitors.

The Best Seasons According to Your Travel Goals

  • For a safari: January–March and July–October (with the Great Migration peak between July and September).
  • For beach holidays (Mombasa, Diani, Lamu): January–February and July–October.
  • For birdwatching: November–April, during the migratory season.
  • For budget-friendly trips: November and June — considered low season with more attractive rates.

Our Practical Tips

  • Tailor your itinerary to the season: Some regions like the Masai Mara are accessible year-round, while others (like Tsavo) are best avoided during the rainy season.
  • Book early for peak season: Especially between July and October when tourism is at its highest.
  • Pack appropriate clothing: Light outfits for daytime, but also a jacket for early morning safaris and cooler evenings.
  • Consider coastal weather: The coast has a tropical climate — hotter and more humid than inland areas.

In Summary

Kenya is a year-round destination, but some times of the year are better suited depending on your interests.
For safaris, July to October remains a safe bet — especially if you want to witness the Great Migration.
If your goal is sun and relaxation, aim for the dry season to avoid tropical downpours.

A well-planned trip means unforgettable memories — between savannahs, beaches, and authentic encounters.
