When to go to Kenya (climate, seasons and tips)

Kenya is a must-see destination for lovers of nature, safaris and African adventure. But to make the most of your trip, it’s essential to choose the right time of year. Here’s a complete guide to Kenya’s climate and seasons, and our tips for planning your stay.

Understanding Kenya’s climate

Kenya has an equatorial climate, with significant variations according to region and altitude. There are mainly two dry seasons and two wet seasons.

Dry seasons

  • January to March: This is one of the best periods for a safari. The vegetation is less dense and animals gather around waterholes. Pleasant temperatures.
  • July to October: The great dry season. This is also the time of the Great Migration in the Masai Mara, a spectacular moment. Ideal for safaris and beach holidays.

Wet seasons

  • Short rainy season (November-December): Short rains, usually at the end of the day. Still possible to travel, especially on safari, with lush green landscapes.
  • Main rainy season (April-May-June): Heavy rains, muddy tracks, some roads impassable. Generally to be avoided for a first trip.

The best periods to suit your needs

  • For a safari: January-March and July-October (with a peak for the Great Migration from July to September).
  • To enjoy the beaches (Mombasa, Diani, Lamu): January-February and July-October.
  • Birdwatching: November to April, during bird migration.
  • For gentler prices: November and June are considered off-peak periods with attractive rates.

Our practical advice

  • Adapt your itinerary to the season: some regions, like the Masai Mara, are accessible all year round, while others (like Tsavo) are best avoided during the rainy season.
  • Book in advance for high season: Particularly between July and October, when tourism is at its peak.
  • Appropriate clothing: Light clothing for the day, but also a jacket for morning safaris and cooler evenings.
  • Anticipating coastal weather: The climate here is tropical, warmer and more humid than inland.

In a nutshell

Kenya can be visited all year round, but there are certain times of the year that you’ll want to visit. For a safari, a trip between July and October is a safe choice, especially if you want to witness the Great Migration. If you’re looking for beaches and idleness, prefer the dry season, away from the tropical rains.

If you plan well, you’re sure to have an unforgettable trip, between savannahs, beaches and authentic encounters.
