When we think of an African safari, we often think of the Big Five. But Zambia, with its vast wild plains and unspoilt national parks, is also home to rare, sometimes endemic, species found almost nowhere else.
Here are 7 fascinating animals to see on a trip to Zambia, and more importantly, where to spot them!
1. Black seahorse (Sable antelope)
📍 Where to see it: Kafue or South Luangwa National Park
Majestic with its long, arched horns and dark coat, the black hippotrague is a symbol of power. It’s a rare sight elsewhere in southern Africa, but Zambia remains one of the best places to see one.
2. The puku
📍 Where to see it: South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi
A little-known antelope, the puku lives in marshy areas. With its honey-colored coat and shy gait, it is one of Luangwa’s most emblematic animals. It is also virtually endemic to Zambia.
3. Saddle-billed stork
📍 Where to see it : Lower Zambezi National Park
With its bright red, black and yellow beak, it is simply spectacular. This giant stork can reach 1.50 m in height and is often seen alone or in pairs near rivers.
4. The wild dog pictus
📍 Where to see it: Kafue and South Luangwa (with a bit of luck)
Extremely endangered, the wild dog is one of the most effective predators… but also one of the most difficult to observe. They live in close-knit packs, and their appearances are always a rare treat.
5. The cheetah
📍 Where to see it : Liuwa Plain National Park
Rarely seen in other Zambian parks, cheetahs find refuge in the open plains of Liuwa. This park, still largely untouristed by tourists, offers a unique viewing experience in a wild and isolated environment.
6. Greater kudu
📍 Where to see it: Lower Zambezi and South Luangwa
Recognizable by its large, twisted horns and elegant silhouette, the kudu is one of Africa’s most beautiful antelopes. Its natural camouflage makes it difficult to spot, but it is well represented in several Zambian parks.
7. The Nile crocodile (XXL version)
📍 Where to see it: along the Zambezi River
The crocodiles seen in Zambia, particularly around the Lower Zambezi, are among the most impressive in Africa: some reach over 5 meters in length! A fascinating creature… to be observed from afar 😉
Why is Zambia so special for wildlife lovers?
Thanks to sustainable park management and a tourism industry still untouched by the mass market, Zambia offers wilder, more authentic safari experiences that are often more respectful of ecosystems. It’s also a country where some endangered animals still find refuge.
