Looking for a unique journey to the heart of Africa?
Uganda and Rwanda, two neighboring countries in East Africa, each offer unforgettable experiences… but with very different atmospheres.
From raw nature to soothing hills, intense treks to confidential safaris, here’s our guide to choosing the country that suits you best.
Nature & landscapes: two faces of Africa
- Uganda: here, nature is wild and contrasting. Thick tropical forests, large lakes (including the mythical Lake Victoria), dormant volcanoes, savannahs and roaring waterfalls like Murchison Falls. This is Africa in a nutshell.
- Rwanda: nicknamed the “Land of a Thousand Hills”, this country offers gentler, greener, more well-tended landscapes. Volcanic lakes, tea plantations, terraced hills… this is a more peaceful Africa, ideal for a first immersion.
Gorillas: the same encounter, two atmospheres
- In Uganda, we go gorilla hunting in the impenetrable Bwindi forest. The trails are more rustic, the treks more physical, and the environment very wild. The experience is often intense, profound and almost mystical.
- In Rwanda, the Volcanoes National Park is the place to be. The trails are well-developed, the experience more accessible, with highly structured supervision. It’s more comfortable, but a little less raw.
Safaris: solitude or exclusivity?
- Uganda : Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, Lake Mburo… Parks that are still rarely visited, with real diversity: climbing lions, elephants, hippos, rare birds, and exceptional river cruises. A discreet paradise for nature lovers without the crowds.
- Rwanda: Akagera is the country’s only major safari park. It is very well managed, with wildlife gradually returning (including the Big Five). Less extensive than those in Uganda, but perfect for a 1 or 2-day experience.
Atmosphere & welcome
- Uganda: this is Africa “roots”, natural and authentic. Our encounters with the locals are simple and spontaneous, marked by great hospitality and genuine curiosity.
- Rwanda: the welcome is warm, but more discreet. The country is highly organized, clean and safe, with a strong collective conscience. As a result, tourism is more structured and sometimes more “formal”.
Logistics & budget
- Uganda: more affordable, especially for gorilla permits. On the other hand, roads can be longer and less well maintained. The adventure begins as soon as you get there!
- Rwanda: impeccable infrastructure, paved roads, shorter journey times. But the overall cost is higher, especially for gorilla treks (permits at 1,500 USD).
For whom?
- Uganda: perfect for adventurers, travelers in search of raw nature, trekking enthusiasts and off-the-beaten-track discoverers.
- Rwanda: ideal for first-time travelers to Africa, those looking for comfort and logistical ease, or those with only a week to spare.
In a nutshell
Two neighboring countries, two strong identities.
One is more raw, wild and spontaneous. The other is more organized, gentle and accessible.
But in both cases, the encounters with mountain gorillas, the intimate safaris and the richness of human encounters leave a lasting impression.
How about combining the two for an even more complete trip?
